The Art of Travel

The six artists from Gachang Art Studio have continued to sail as artists in their own way. As all the trips would involve a lot of unexpected variables, their journeys there would not have always been a pleasure. Nevertheless, the reason why it would be better for artists that all the space would rather be a temporary stay is perhaps because those constraints are much better than being trapped in boring routines. Stagnant water is bound to rot. From the difficult skills of learning a language in a foreign country to the trivial travel skills of learning to take a seat on the aisle to make it easier to get to the toilet on an airplane, travel provides an opportunity for growth for many people no matter what their purpose is. As if the unexpected variables on a trip becomes the initiative of creation or some people experience bringing all the dead senses back in travel, one might like to call the life of an artist a ‘journey’ because their ongoing will to create art that happily accepts all the constraints is the power that sustains their lives.

여섯 명의 가창창작스튜디오의 작가들은 이렇듯 자신만의 방식으로 예술가로서의 항해를 계속해오고 있다. 모든 여행이 예기치 않은 많은 변수를 포함하듯 이들의 가창에서의 여정도 마냥 즐겁지만은 않았을 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 예술가들에게 모든 공간이 임시 거처인 편이 차라리 나은 것은 아마도 그러한 제약들이 지루한 일상에 매여 매너리즘에 빠지는 것보다 훨씬 낫기 때문일 것이다. 고인 물은 썩기 마련이다. 낯선 나라의 언어를 습득하는 어려운 기술에서부터 비행기에서 화장실을 쉽게 가기 위해 통로 쪽 좌석을 택하는 편이 낫다는 것을 배우는 등의 사소한 여행의 기술까지 여행은 그 목적이 무엇이든 간에 많은 사람들에게 성장의 기회를 제공한다. 예술가의 삶을 ‘여행’이라 부르고 싶은 것은 여행이 제공하는 뜻밖의 변수들이 창작의 기폭제가 되듯, 여행지에서 죽은 감각들이 되살아나는 경험을 하듯 모든 제약들을 기꺼이 맞아들이게 하는 예술가들의 고이지 않는 창작에 대한 의지야말로 그들의 삶을 지속시키는 힘이기 때문이다.
