The Walden Pond in Our Age ์šฐ๋ฆฌ ์‹œ๋Œ€์˜ ์›”๋“  ํ˜ธ์ˆ˜

[ENG][ํ•œ๊ตญ์–ด] The Walden Pond in Our Age

Published in 1854, โ€˜Waldenโ€™ describes Henri David Thoreauโ€™s experience of living in nature for two years, two months and two days away from the benefits of civilization. As a transcendentalist who lived in a cabin that he built in natural surroundings, he gives us a lesson of the importance in simple living. It is about independence as a human being, social experiment, spiritual discovery, and a sense of self-reliance that can be given by nature.

The text written in 1854 is still impressive while we live in the age of technology. The fact that we still make documentary TV programs like โ€˜I Am Living with Natureโ€™ reflects that people want to live in peace and solitude in nature like Thoreau. A lot of people living in modern society suffer from new diseases like burn-out syndrome, panic disorder and stress disorder caused from pressure. They can easily relate to a quiet solitary life deep in the mountains that the program introduces. Thoreau might have felt pressure from living in the society and escaped from it while he explored the philosophies of transcendentalism and individualism to reach self-realization. Ironically, however, part of what he did while living a simple life at Walden Pond was study-civilized society. Also, when his essay was published, he was back in the city. It was not just about being self-sufficient in nature. It was about a more objective understanding of society through personal inspection by being transcendental in nature. Whether it is on oneโ€™s own will or not, each one of the participants of โ€˜I Am Living with Natureโ€™ might have had the same ultimate goal of reaching self-realization and becoming a better civilized person while living in harmony with nature.

A project, โ€˜The Walden Pond in Our Ageโ€™ is about what artists in our age feel about nature and how they express it through their work of art. A lot of aspects of nature, such as the aspect of the kind mother of humanity and that of the artificially beautiful nature have been reflected in many artistsโ€™ works with their own inner urge. Indeed, a new nature can be presented through a work of art. It can be deeply personal and universal at the same time. It encompasses the sublimity of nature, the fear as a human being, and the thrill caused from creating a work of art. For the project, โ€˜The Walden Pond in Our Ageโ€™, sculptor, Kangho Shin presents a new nature and reinterprets our daily lives by exhibiting his wooden sculptures of musicians playing various instruments while musicians actually have a performance in the venue of his exhibition. It is a site where the traditional and the modern co-exist, making the audiences feel how the sense of self-reliance that Thoreau achieved is expressed in an artwork and how it affects them.

By collecting certain trees and trimming them in his own way, Kangho Shin expresses how he feels about nature, especially, the gap between our reality and nature itself. With trees that he treats with his affection, he visualizes harmony between man and nature. As the Italian sculptor, Michelangelo already knew the ideal form that he wanted to make once he saw the material, Kangho Shin converses with trees and thinks of the form of his sculpture in the process of cutting and trimming them. His artwork reminds us of the concept of the re-presentation of nature in classical art, in which presenting the ideal body of man was important. The curvy lines of his trees evoke the beauty of nature itself as well as the beauty of man that the trees imply with certain poses and gestures. They also represent various types of our contemporaries including musicians that he visualizes in his sculpture, which is related to his previous series, โ€˜The Spirit of Treesโ€™. By controlling colors and texture of his sculptures and shaping them sophisticatedly, he expresses human beings living with nature harmoniously. Through the personified trees representing musicians playing various instruments and a live performance that features musicians creating beautiful melodies, he intends to show us an ideal, modernized nature, in which the beauty of nature and that of the man-made world coexist.

Artists are sensitive to nature and social phenomena. With their artistic language, they make their own document of what they experience. The project, โ€˜The Walden Pond in Our Ageโ€™ will encourage the audiences imagine the old days when man and the God were able to converse and relate to how artists express what they feel about nature through various experiments. With his or her own art form, each artist of the project will surely embody Thoreauโ€™s message of achieving a sense of self-reliance from nature, which is valuable in our modern, complicated society.
