A Topography of Mind 마음의 지형도

Regardless of the time, people have been horrified by lots of wars and irresistible natural disasters. Especially, artists are vulnerable to them and their work of art gests affected by them easily. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed lots of people, triggering severe social and economic disruption around the world, which makes us pessimistic about our future. It is interesting that people in the past also had the mood of pessimism in the time of war and pandemic. A Spanish painter and printmaker, Francisco de Goya, often referred to as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns, made lots of anti-war drawings and paintings including the dark, pessimistic series of Black paintings suggesting that he feared for his country’s fate and his own mental and physical health. Living in isolation, he applied on oil on the plaster walls of his house reflecting a bleak outlook on personal, social and political levels, which tells us that wars and disasters tend to make artists turn inwards and introspect. Like Goya, artist Jiyoung Moon has been making her work of art on a daily basis as writing a diary, using various colors and traditional Korean patterns as a means of expressing the visual imagery of her mind and healing herself. After all, it is not an exaggeration to say that the purpose of art making is the artist’s survival.

Jiyoung Moon has been teaching children art for 30 years and says that she learns art from them, which explains why her artwork looks pure and simple. Her artwork is classified into three categories. For her work of art, she dyes on Korean paper, reflecting the state of her mind. And she makes silk-screen paintings, using images of traditional Korean patterns. She also uses acrylic paints, making layers of them as if they were a topography of her mind. For one of her artworks, she installed transparent acrylic boxes filled with colored papers folded in order, expressing the harmony among various colors, patterns and the afterimages of them reflected in the shadow. When dying on Korean papers, she hangs them on the clothes line and lets the paints drop down to make natural shapes and patterns that remind us of images of nature like colors of the four seasons. Without depicting the images of nature representationally, she makes a great landscape painting with the accidental stains of the paints. Through her paintings, she tells us to feel the pleasure that various colors give us, comforting us living in the horror of pandemic. As a person who feels closer to children than adults and builds the world of her artwork by learning from them, she might have wanted to make the fence of her inner world harder in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic to protect herself. And the traditional Korean patterns that she uses for her silk-screen paintings can be a great source to be free from feeling isolated while being locked in her inner world. Borrowing the lotus pattern that symbolizes the purity and the ten creatures of longevity, of which we all share the good vibe, she might have felt relieved from the fear of the pandemic and wanted us to feel united.

Jiyoung Moon doesn’t seem to have the powerful brushstroke that the British painter, Cecily Brown has, however, she reminds me of the artist, Etel Adnan who filled her small canvases with warm and lovely colors until death. Her small paintings are all about the traces of her life that make a great epic, which gives us a great lesson that everyday of our lives is a meaningful blessing.

예나 지금이나 전쟁과 재난은 많은 예술가들을 공포로 몰아 넣으며 그들의 작업에 많은 영향을 끼쳐 왔다. 지금 우리가 겪고 있는 코로나 재앙 역시 많은 사람들을 불안에 떨게 만든다. 위드 코로나를 지향하며 달라진 일상으로 돌아가려는 우리에게 변화무쌍한 질병의 변이와 파급력은 우리로 하여금 상황을 낙관할 수 없게 만든다. 이러한 시대 유감은 실은 어느 때나 존재했을 것이다. 스페인의 화가 프란시스 고야(Francisco Goya)는 궁정 화가로 일하며 밝은 색채로 왕실 일가와 귀족을 그렸지만 말년에 홀로 귀가 먹은 채 외딴 집의 벽에 그가 남겼다고 추정되는 검은 회화(Black paintings) 시리즈를 보면 알 수 있다. 그것은 스페인 내전으로 인한 불안의 영향이며 우울한 시대를 보는 그의 공포스러운 시선이 여지 없이 담겨 있어 그를 미술의 역사의 한 부분을 차지하게 만들었다. 전쟁이나 재난은 예술가로 하여금 더욱 내면으로 침잠하게 만든다. 특히 코로나는 많은 사람들을 칩거하게 만들었고 화가들을 더욱 자신의 그림, 그 네모난 소우주 속으로 숨어 들게 했다. 특정한 색과 다양한 전통 문양의 표현을 통해 자신의 심상을 그려 내는 작가 문지영 또한 힘든 하루하루의 일과를 기록하듯 작업해 왔으며 작업을 통해 마음을 지배하는 불안과 아픔을 치유할 수 있었다고 한다. 그러고 보면 예술가에게 예술의 목적은 무엇보다 생존과 맞닿아 있다고 하지 않을 수 없다.

아이들과의 교감을 통해 많은 것들을 배운다고 말하는 문지영 작가는 30년 가까이 미술 교육에 종사하며 오랫동안 내공을 쌓아 왔다. 그래서인지 그녀의 작품 세계는 어린 아이의 그림처럼 맑고 순수한 특징을 갖는다. 주로 한지에 다양한 마음의 색들을 물들이는 염색 작업, 우리 전통 문양이 갖는 상서로운 의미들에 자신의 염원을 투영시켜 만든 실크 스크린 작업, 그리고 자신의 마음의 지층을 표현하듯 물감을 켜켜이 쌓아 올려 만들어 낸 아크릴 회화 작업 등으로 압축되며 다채로운 색과 패턴에 반영된 마음의 지형도에 관한 것이라 할 수 있다. 투명한 아크릴 상자에 노랑, 분홍, 초록, 파랑 등의 여러 색상의 종이를 일정한 패턴으로 접어 넣어 전시한 작품에서는 색이 만들어 내는 조화, 접힌 종이가 만들어 내는 일정하면서도 불규칙한 주름의 패턴이 주는 질서, 그리고 그 그림자에서 오는 잔상의 여운을 경험할 수 있다. 다양한 톤으로 한지를 물들이는 작업은 더욱 흥미로운데 염색 과정에서 안료가 중력에 의해 떨어지며 만들어 내는 우연적 결과물에 관한 것이다. 점점이 모이거나 흩어지는 물감 자국은 마치 한 폭의 풍경화처럼 우리에게 봄, 여름, 가을, 겨울 등의 이미지를 비롯한 자연을 마구 연상시키게 한다. 묘사하려 애쓰지 않아도 얻어 낼 수 있는 이러한 색들이 주는 쾌감을 아이처럼 한껏 즐기며 마치 우리에게도 한번 느껴 보라고 이야기하는 듯하다. 코로나로 인해 느끼게 되는 불안과 공포가 유난히 힘들었다는 문지영 작가에게 색과 형태로 스스로 만들어 내는 세계의 질서와 조화는 분명 위로가 되었을 것이라 생각된다. 어른의 세계 보다 아이들과의 교감을 통해 독특한 자신의 작품 세계를 구축해 온 그녀에게 시시각각 불안으로 몰아 넣는 코로나와 각종 가짜 뉴스의 세상은 그녀로 하여금 더욱 더 자신만의 울타리를 세우게 했을 것이다. 그 속에서 오는 고립감을 해소하기 위한 수단으로 그녀가 택한 것이 우리 전통 문양 실크 스크린 작업이 아니었을까 유추해 본다. 우리 전통 문양이 갖고 있는 의미에 주목했다는 그녀에게 진창 속에서 자라도 더럽혀 지지 않는 연꽃의 순수함, 행복과 기쁨을 상징하는 십장생이나 화조 등의 상서로움이 어려운 시대를 지내고 있는 자신의 마음에 와 닿기를 바라는 마음이 강하게 작용하지 않았을까? 우리 전통 문양이 전해 주는 해학과 보편적 정서에서 공동체 의식과 연대감 등을 느끼며 자신을 영화 ‘어바웃 어 보이(About a Boy)’에서 이야기하는 홀로 떠 있지만 함께인 섬처럼 여길 수 있지 않았을까 생각해 본다.

문지영 작가에게는 힘 있는 제스처를 강조하는 그림을 그리는 세실리 브라운(Cecily Brown)과 같은 면모는 없을지도 모르지만 죽을 때까지 꾸준히 소소하게 자신의 작업을 이어 나갔던 에텔 아드난(Etel Adnan)과 같은 화가의 자세가 느껴 진다. 그녀가 만들어 내는 작은 그림들, 하루하루의 일기와도 같은 그 흔적들이 모여 그렇게 하나의 커다란 서사가 만들어 진다는 사실이, 불안을 떨치며 하루하루 의미를 담고 살아가는 우리의 나날들이 어쩌면 너무도 당연하게 여겼던, 진짜 감사해야 할 행복이었다는 것을 조용히 이야기해 주고 있다.
