Garden of Fantasy ํ™˜์ƒ ์ •์›

Jung Inhee, ์ ๋ง‰ ํ™˜์ƒ, 53x34cm, Acrylic on canvas, 2021, photo by @spotlessfoto

The Covid-19 Pandemic has changed our lives in a lot of ways. While weโ€™ve gotten used to having a meeting or class online, our way of life has been defined by new terms like โ€˜untactโ€™. Now we perceive the virtual world on the internet as almost real. People who are more used to flat images of nature on the internet might not have the feeling of the sublime that old philosophers like Immanuel Kant and Edmund Burke had about nature. However, nature has inspired a lot of artists for a long time, including the young artist, Inhee Jung, who has just realized a great lesson from nature and made her work of art using nature in her new environment, Jeju.

Since people in prehistoric ages left cave paintings of animals in shamanic and religious practices, a lot of artists have been making artwork with their sense of spirituality, which is a key to understanding their emotions and the meaning of nature to them. Even in the age of high technology, what defines a human's relationship to the natural world is spirituality that can be an individualโ€™s inner experience or belief system, allowing one to transcend beyond the present context and be part of nature. Through her recent artwork, Inhee Jung tells us how nature has inspired and changed her. Settling down in a quiet place in Jeju, she has discovered herself as a part of nature and made lots of changes in her painting. It may have been inevitable and certainly challenging for her to try something new, however, she has been using more natural colors on the canvas, which is a traditional medium compared to the steel plate that she used for her previous work. What made the changes possible for her must have been the new environment in Jeju.

A lot of artists, including the painter of German Romanticism, Caspar David Friedrich, have expressed nature as something beautiful that overwhelms and destroys human beings like in the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Through the large colored paintings of Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, those painters conveyed something beyond what the viewers could experience in daily life, making them cry with the feeling of the sublime like the mystery of nature or the sense of unity with God. Nature seems to be still, but ever changing, warns us of things such as climate change and inspires young artists like her even in the age of high technology today when images of nature, such as the red sunset, vast deserts and seas are perceived as flat images like a road sign and printed ads.

Unlike the way she worked on her previous series of artwork, in which she established her own rules of expressing emotions by matching words like โ€˜sorrowโ€™ or โ€˜hopeโ€™ with certain colors and patterns, she lets the painting express itself as if following the order of nature. Having the experience of subjugation to nature, she has realized herself that has a sense of oneness with the broad universe. It is so different from the process of her previous series of artwork, โ€˜The Prison Notebooksโ€™ inspired by the Italian writer Antonio Gramsci who wrote lots of essays during his imprisonment. Through those paintings of the series, she wanted to make a documentation of her inner state while locked up in her studio like him. In her new paintings, however, she quietly expresses the colors of nature, such as the reed, ellipticus plant, and snow, etc., making unique textures on her canvas as if they were the traces of nature. The ever changing nature of Jeju must have been new to her, evoking sublime emotion that she never had while she worked on โ€˜The Prison Notebooksโ€™ in her old studio in the busy city. Experiencing a visual hallucination of seeing something that disappears in a flash in her garden of fantasy, she applies colors and patterns that are in between as if expressing the nature itself that seems to be quiet, but ever changing. Instead of using strong colors, shapes like a short stick and books, and letters as a visual element, she uses the colors of pastel tone, concentric circles of the stepping stones in her garden, raindrops, moonlight and the shape of her cat all of which symbolise nature to her. The beauty and sublime that old poets and artists experienced in nature, has turned into a quiet world of fantasy on her canvas. They are scenes of our daily lives that belong to the bigger universe showing the variety of nature. The garden, which is a passage to her house that keeps her warm from the wind of Jeju, might have made her feel delightful awe and keep the aesthetic distance. As the American philosopher, William James mentioned, nature nurtures her mentality and makes her communicate with it in her own visual language. Even though she is a young artist who belongs to the generation that perceives natural phenomena, such as the great plain, dark blue sea, and the sheer cliff as a flat image shown on the internet, the viewers can notice that what she pursues through her painting is to convey the sense of interconnectedness and oneness between the entire universe and her personal sphere. It is interesting that some of her paintings look similar to those of a Syrian-American artist, Etel Adnan who is in her ninety, which tells us that nature teaches us the universal truth that we realize regardless of age. Like Etel Adnan visualized oceans, mountains, and valleys in her own realistic and abstract way, she makes us peek into her garden of fantasy where the stepping stones, cats and moonlight are in perfect harmony.

Presenting nature that she has realized in her garden, she urges us to listen to the voice of nature awakening our spirituality that makes us one with the entire universe. As if she proved that it is cited in works of art, such as poems, paintings, and music, her painting allows us to stop moving. It is truly delightful that her new painting invites us into nature this bust world.
